Volt (V)

The numerical value of the electrical potential between two points in a circuit, named after Italian physicist Count Alessandro Volta. Voltage can be explained using a liquid analogy: a high pressure hosepipe would be considered high voltage, whilst a slow-moving stream could be compared to low voltage.

A volt is defined as the electrical potential difference or pressure across a one ohm resistance carrying a current of one ampere.

  • Volts = Wattage/Amperes.
